Alternate Routes 2018: Social Inequality And The Spectre Of Social Justice

Product Description

At the core of this issue is an emphasis that social inequality is central, not incidental, to capitalist ‘laws of motion’. The pushback generated from these systemic social dislocations take the form of various struggles for social justice. This includes demands for recognizing the role of socially reproductive labour in backstopping unequal economic arrangements, and efforts to curtail the marginalization of the elderly poor, vulnerable young and im/migrant communities. Other contributors tie the issue of global citizenship to neoliberal propaganda and propose new ways for theorizing the causes and consequences of social inequality. A range of interventions challenge conceptual understandings of the north-south divide and transnational capitalist class formation, including new efforts to organize emerging ‘gig’ economy workers. Personal activist histories chart struggles for independent living led by people with disabilities, demands for human rights, as well as Indigenous metaphysics, language and stories as the primary source of strategy in the struggle to regain control of their lives, lands and resources.
